Eighteen months before the election, a handful of Republican presidential hopefuls participated in a debate Thursday night, allowing much of America to get a sampling of the ideals held by just a few of those considering a run. With many Libertarian-leaning candidates looking to secure a nomination, however, what does this hold for the future of the GOP? Columnist Tim Cavanaugh and blogger Reihan Salam voice their thoughts on Thursday's debate.Follow Lauren on Twitter at http://twitter.com/laurenlyste...

Reihan Salam, a conservative shill who got hired for his skin colour. Every panel he goes on, he uses his immigrant background and skin colour as a gimmick to promote failed neo-conservative ideas.

Time for a 3rd party. Democrats and Republicans are 2 sides of the same coin.

@michealati2 Absolutely. Watch the videos from the 2007 GOP debates, Ron Paul was crucified by the neo cons for saying that the only reason the terrorists want to kill us is because we prop up regimes, occupy their homeland and aid their enemies.

@michealati2 Agreed, usually intelligent debate is met with "who can talk the loudest" mentality or a disscussion of trivialities like birth certificates. I've had people telling me for a long time Ron Paul can't win, but for me to not vote with my conscience is truly throwing away my vote. the 2 partys have different talking points but once they are elected their foreign and economic policies are identical. I understand your anger with the neo-cons but I want real change, an end of Imperialism.

@michealati2 I just think it's funny how people who identify with a party will make excuses for the President when he comes from their party. If it were McCain who were killing thousands of civillians in Afghanistan you would be livid. And I don't think it is a forgone conclusion he will get elected, a lot of independents voted for him because he presented himself as an anti war candidate. Not to mention he promised to cut the defecit in half in his first term and instead it doubled.

@michealati2 Im having a tough time understanding how I proved your point when you said that the most they could donate was 2,500 and I pointed out that he recieved milions from the same banks he turned around and gave almost a trillion dollars to. And yes, the bailouts started when Bush was still in office. Obama and Bush were both endorsing it, Bush was a lame duck with an aproval rating under 10 percent and Obama was the president elect being treated like the second coming of Christ.

@michealati2 The money was donated by the organizations PAC, the information is available online. Goldman Sachs gave $994, 795 and JP Morgan gave $695, 132, I'd say that was money well spent. When Obama got together with Larry Summers and Timothy Geitner they decided the best thing to ease the burden on the American people during the recession was to give those banks and others $700,000,000. But it's crazy talk to think that adults in a free society can be in charge of their own lives.

@michealati2 : Fine. Give Obama the credit, but also give him the credit for the deaths of thousands of american soldiers who've died and continue to die in a war with a country that didn't even hold Osama. Give Obama credit for giving the country that gave Osama refuge, houses terrorists, and holds nuclear weapons, 30 billion dollars every year in foreign aid. Why do you think they didn't tell pakistan of their plan? Because he knew they'd tip him off to protect him. Give him ALL credit!

@michealati2 : Haha, and you said my comment made no sense. I don't give the credit to a man who spent a couple minutes on the telephone when it was our troops who have fought and died for years to get him. It was a soldiers gun that shot him. A soldier whom President Obama was about to deny him his paycheck a month ago b/c during his leadership, he couldn't get anyone to agree on a budget. Sorry dude, but pencil pushers deserve no credit when others do the work.
